Tsunami of Google Waves
Finally, I got a chance to look at the Google Wave key note video. I just could not get my eyes off the video from start to end. This is heavenly stuff. It is simply mind blowing.
In simple words, Wave is a ultimate communication platform where you can have convergence of email, instant messenger, blogs, wiki, twitter & what not. One can send an “email”, one receiver can edit it, one more can reply to it, making the entire conversation as a shared “wave document”. The coolest part is that one can “play back” the entire sequence of events that made the current shape of the wave document possible. I just LOVE this feature. I can think of unlimited potential just for this feature alone. The other impressive feature is that all events on a given wave document can be seen in “real time” by users who are online. Multiple users can change the same wave document and every one can get real time updates of what all others are doing. That is mind boggling.
One more very interesting thing is that Google made this entire thing open source and provided APIs for developers to create their own extensions and also to embed “Waves” in their own applications. Here is a list of 17 extensions that developers already created, suggesting that it should be easy to use API.
On top this, Google also is proposing a “Wave Protocol“, for community to create their own Wave server and Wave client. This will help Google proliferate the usage of Wave.
There is a whole bunch of terminology Wavelet, Blip, Robot etc which I am sure all of us will become familiar very soon.
Here is the link to key note address video from YouTube (I just love the Chess game “playback” in the demo) - don’t miss it.
